THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

Dividing Property

We have been in the underworld long enough. Let us return to our own world, where money and property often perplex us. A difficult task faces the man or woman who must divide property by a will. Should his or her will convey some hidden, and perhaps unintended, message to those who receive inheritances and those who do not? Should the will seek to accomplish in death what could not be done in life, perhaps attempting to atone for not giving more of oneself? And do the beneficiaries understand their relationship to the person writing this last will and testament? Or should these beneficiaries, who may be adult children, search in the disposition of property for love and parental concern? The will is the last expression of the deceased. There is no opportunity for the beneficiaries to ask questions about intention and love, unless like Aeneas they seek their parents in the underworld.

In the Bible when a man in a crowd demands of Jesus to “bid my brother divide the inheritance with me,” he speaks for so many of us who feel that we have not been given enough. Jesus refuses to be a divider of property, answering, “Man, who made me judge or divider over you?” Then Jesus warns the people in the crowd, “Take heed, and beware of all covetousness, for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

So a wise and industrious father in “A Father and Sons,” one of Aesop’s Fables, tells his sons on his death bed that he has hidden a treasure in the vineyard. After the father’s death, the sons labor in the vineyard, turning over the soil in search of the treasure. While they find no treasure, their work makes the next harvest so rich that they profit from their labor. The moral given for this story is that good counsel is the best legacy, especially if the children also receive both the curiosity and inclination to follow the good counsel.
